ELIGE MADERA World Environment Day: What is CMPC's role? In the context of World Environment Day, it is important for us to highlight its importance for our company, especially because our industrial processes are directly related to nature and its raw materials. For this reason, we want to tell you where we are today at CMPC in terms of sustainable development and how we always seek to meet the needs of the present, but without compromising the ability of future generations. What is CMPC's vision? At CMPC we are constantly striving to ensure that our production processes are carried out in the most sustainable manner possible, which is why our environmental policies include four main lines of action: sustainable forestry management, efficient energy use, efficient water use and paper recycling. Regarding sustainable forest management, 90.3% of our forests are certified by CERTFOR-PEFC; and the wood we use comes from fast-growing renewable plantations, most of which are located on eroded land, which allows us to renew that land and conserve natural forests. Now, continuing with the second line of action, the efficient use of energy, it is necessary to mention that 79% of the total electrical energy comes from Non-Conventional Renewable Energies, being biomass the main source, this comes mostly from wood residues from plantation management, lignin separated from cellulose and industrial sludge generated in the treatment of liquid effluent. Regarding the sustainable use of water, at CMPC we have managed to obtain 92% of water from surface sources and, in addition, 83% of the water captured is returned to the ecosystem (CMPC Sustainability Report 2020); the goal in this regard is to reduce industrial water use by 40% by 2025. And finally, in terms of paper recycling, CMPC recycles 604,742 tons of paper and cardboard per year, which is equivalent, in other words, to 15 national stadiums. All these factors position us as one of the most eco-efficient companies on the planet, being in 2020, the second most sustainable forestry company in the world according to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index; a recognition that motivates us to continue improving and to increase our expectations regarding our future goals.
