ELIGE MADERA Wood, an important pillar in the construction of the new amphitheater of the Roman Colosseum It all started in 2020, when it was announced that there would be an international competition to build a new amphitheater in the Colosseum, a great challenge for Italy, according to the Minister of Culture of that country. The competition was carried out through Invitalia by the Collegio Romano and of all the projects that participated, Milan Ingegneria was the one that won the bid; its proposal involves words such as conservation, protection and use of technology; concepts that will result in a light, reversible and sustainable amphitheater. It all started in 2020, when it was announced that there would be an international competition to build a new amphitheater in the Colosseum, a great challenge for Italy, according to the Minister of Culture of that country. The competition was carried out through Invitalia by the Collegio Romano and of all the projects that participated, Milan Ingegneria was the one that won the bid; its proposal involves words such as conservation, protection and use of technology; concepts that will result in a light, reversible and sustainable amphitheater. In terms of materials, the amphitheater will have movable panels covered with accoya wood and will have a carbon fiber core that will cover the floor, resulting in a sustainable structure, since the trees are certified and will guarantee resistance and durability in the construction. In addition, the floor will be made of movable panels and will have the power to rotate. This will ensure flexibility and allow the subway structure to be seen in a privileged view. For the engineer in charge of the project, Massimiliano Milan, one of the most important points is the technology that will be used, which will have the ability to be reversible, in his words: "The project guarantees reversibility. Structures without deep anchors will be installed in the Colosseum: if in 30 or 100 years there is the will to remove the structure, it will be possible to restore the state of things. The structure is isolated from the archaeological walls, and the plan is lighter than the original because the movable panels are made of carbon coated with treated wood, resistant to biological attack. The structure guarantees the microclimatic conditions of the hypogeum with 24 controlled ventilation units and a humidity monitoring system inside." Beyond all the technical aspects of the design plan, the one that stands out the most is its eco-sustainability property, something that goes from the materials to be used -such as wood- to the rainwater recycling system for the water supply of the Coliseum's services. Now, the project will not be launched until the end of this year or early 2022; but what is definite is that L'Arena del Colosseo will be fully accessible by the end of 2023.
