ELIGE MADERA The role of recycling for a cleaner future On May 17th, World Recycling Day, it is important to remember the impact of this activity on the environment and how it could help improve a critical situation for the planet. On May 17th, World Recycling Day, it is important to remember the impact of this activity on the environment and how it could help improve a critical situation for the planet. According to data from "The World Bank", every year 2 billion tons of waste are generated in the world and by 2050 the number is expected to increase to 3.5 billion tons. However, in the national scenario the figures are not at all encouraging: Chile generates 1.15 kilos of garbage per person daily, which makes us the largest generator of garbage per capita in South America. Faced with this, it is necessary to take actions in this topic.Among them, recycling is a key bet that could help improve the situation. For this reason we tell you some of its benefits: Benefits Reduced landfill waste: recycling reduces the amount of solid waste going to landfills, which could eventually close because they take up less space. Saves energy: it is easier to recycle a product than to manufacture it from scratch. Avoid exploitation of natural resources: if we give a second, third, or fourth use to the original materials, we are avoiding using more natural resources to manufacture them again. CMPC's role In CMPC we are not oblivious to this reality and we know that recycling plays a fundamental role for a more sustainable development. We have also generated actions in favor of this activity. On March 9th we joined the initiative "Chile without Garbage 2040" where we are committed to create projects and initiatives, both internal and external, in the communities where we have a productive presence. Specifically, some activities that will be developed will be some changes in logistics, in order to generate less waste in corporate buildings and educational campaigns regarding recycling as well, and corporate volunteering to clean up micro-dumps. In addition to this, in 2018 we also took the initiative and developed the "Zero Waste" plan which, as the name says, aims to reduce the amount of waste we produce. To achieve this we have developed projects that seek to reduce the generation of environmental liabilities to promote a circular economy. All these actions are part of our commitments to achieve sustainable development, where our goal for 2015 is to be a zero waste company.
