ELIGE MADERA Quayside: The Smart City Among the many ambitious projects seen on this blog, Quayside - a bid for a "smart city" -may be the largest ever proposed. Among the many ambitious projects seen on this blog, Quayside - a bid for a "smart city" -may be the largest ever proposed. Located on the shores of Lake Ontario, Quayside was initially proposed in 2017 as one of the largest wood projects in Canada. It was later postponed but today its implementation is being evaluated with a new pilot space spanning almost 5 hectares facing the lake. The solid wood project will include more than 800 residences, an arts and cultural center, a community care center, as well as educational spaces and an extensive green area. Under the idea of neutralizing its carbon footprint, the smart neighborhood would consist of 5 towers made of locally produced timber, as well as electrical, heating and cooling networks that optimize the use of energy. Moreover, data collection systems would be implemented to constantly develop strategies focused on the well-being and growth of the city. Under the tutelage of Waterfront Toronto and the leadership of the Dream and Great Gulf Group, among other partners, Quayside aims to be a place that fosters inclusion, respect and reconciliation with the indigenous communities of the area. It seeks to put an emphasis on the environment, contribute to the lives of its citizens, and be a source of jobs and growth for the city. In the words of George Zegarac, president and CEO of Waterfront Toronto, "Quayside remains an excellent opportunity to explore innovative solutions for affordable housing, improved mobility, climate change, and several other pressing urban challenges that Toronto—and cities around the world—must address in order to continue to grow and succeed".
