Get to Know the 13 Latest and Most Innovative Wooden Projects from Around the World

The London "World of Wood" festival highlighted the best practices and international examples of wooden construction.

The London "World of Wood" festival highlighted the best practices and international examples of wooden construction.

 

There are many festivals that celebrate design, architecture and innovation with wood, but something that sets the World of Wood Festival apart is its motto: "Wood equals hope." The festival highlights projects that encourage and emphasize wood as a multipurpose material for architecture, design and the environment.

 

Here are the 13 projects that stood out at the European festival:

1.Bungalow Balgowlah in Australia

This project, built with CLT, was the winner of the 21st edition of the Australian Timber Design Awards for Sustainability.

2.  Anthony Timberlands Center in the United States

This building will be a center for innovation in wood design, architecture, construction techniques and product development.

3.  WoodTek HQ in Taiwan

This was the first building built with CLT in Taiwan and has become an icon of green architecture on the continent.

4. Tisis semi-detached houses in Austria

These semi-detached houses were built 100% with timber from sustainably managed forests in Austria and Switzerland.

5. Cederhusen in Sweden

 

This project features four buildings in two blocks, made 100% with wood. It aspires to be one of the largest projects of wooden housing in the world.

6. Hangreen Building in Korea

This five-story, mixed-use project incorporated CLT with high fire-resistance ratings and engineered wood products.

7. Shandong Dingchi Office Building in China

 

This six-story building was built from local timber (Dingchi Wood) and received special approval from the Chinese government (as Chinese law permits buildings to have a maximum of five stories.)

8. The Nanyang Technological University in Singapore

This 40,000m2 project will be one of the largest timber buildings in Asia. It will have six stories and feature a combination of CLT for slabs and glulam for the beams and columns.Imagen

 

9. Dalston Works in the United Kingdom

This entire structure is built with CLT, except for the platform, which is concrete. It’s in the Hackeó district, which has instituted a "timber first" policy for all construction since 2012.Imagen

 

10. Orsman Road in the United Kingdom  

This building features a hybrid structure of CLT and steel, also taking into account its carbon footprint, and advocating for the use of sustainable materials.

11. Black and White in the United Kingdom

London's tallest engineered wood office building features CLT cores that create large open-plan workspaces. It covers an area of 4,200 m2 and has captured more than 1,240 tons of CO2.

12. Aubervilliers in France

These multi-family apartments are built with prefabricated timber frames and covered with pine slats that provide solar protection. They were created as part of an urban renewal project.

13. Líta Kikut in Norway

The architecture of this project was designed to be part of the Norwegian landscape. It consists of 12 apartments located in mountains at 1,010 meters above sea level. Imagen
