Finding new ways to create with materials left over from a construction project is quite an achievement, and that’s precisely what the architecture and design studio Douglas & Company did. Their new proposal, named Pipe Dreams, is made up of 3 pieces of furniture: a divan, a bench and a stool. In order to create this project, they used the mass timber construction solution CLT (Cross-laminated timber) and high-density chip foam, complemented with a touch of blush pink leather. One of the most striking details is the concept of the geometric shapes, which were constructed by stacking uniform layers of wood and foam, leaving the layers of material exposed. The Pipe Dreams collection is inspired by the feeling of a dreamlike state. "Conceiving and launching a new collection in the midst of pervasive uncertainty felt like a fanciful plan at first (...) But we decided to banish our current state of limbo in favor of a new, previously unimaginable reality that is revealing itself. The collection’s pure geometric ensemble and plump curves evoke a playful dreamlike state, appropriate for a not-so-fleeting dream," reflected one of the studio's members, Liani Douglas. CLT was the main material for the construction of this collection and it came from leftover elements of a recent construction project. This Mass Timber solution provides great stability and structural strength to the softwoods used for the panels. The chip foam, on the other hand, is composed of pieces of scrap foam chipped and bonded together. A true example of coexistence between art and sustainability.
