Wood has taken a leading role in the world of architecture, opening the door to more sustainable buildings, in accordance with the world we live in and the needs demanded by the planet. Here are 8 architects who have been able to take advantage of wood’s construction capabilities:

1. AnnaLisa Meyboom

AnnaLisa Meyboom is a professor and architect at the University of British Columbia. She, along with 15 of her students, David Correa of the University of Waterloo and 22 industry participants, built the third Wander Wood Pavilion, a twisted and latticed wood structure made with unique and exclusive components. One of AnnaLisa's goals was to teach students a strategy for bridging the gap between digital design and physical fabrication.

2. Thomas Herzog

This architect has developed projects that use wood as the main focus; this is how he built "Danish Housing Arthus", a housing complex where both the structures and walls were built with wood.

3. Vicente Guallart

There’s also the architect and urban planner Vicente Guallart, who opted for wood in the construction of the Microcoasts in Vinarós, an artistic intervention that created a more accessible and comfortable space for visitors, allowing them to play and sunbathe.

4. Kivi Sotamaa

Kivi Sotamaa is a Finnish architect who is also experimenting with wood and researching its use on a smaller scale, while using this material to construct single-family homes both in Finland and around the world.  One of his major works is "Meteorite", a 3-story house built 100% with CLT.

5. Eva Chacón

Eva Chacón is a woman of many titles: co-founder of the Intergenerational Spaces Lab, partner at Bonsai Architects, professor of Architectural Projects and Construction Materials at the University of Granada, as well as researcher of urban renewal processes in France, Spain and Uruguay. Eva is passionate about sustainable construction; that’s why, together with Bonsai Architects, she has carried out several projects using wood, one of which is the "Apartment Building in Cross-laminated Timber."

6.  Alventosa Morell Arquitects

This studio, formed by Josep Mª Alventosa, Marc Alventosa and Xaviar Morell, has also chosen wood and they’ve designed and built a single-family house almost entirely with wood.

7.  Gilles Retsin

This architect has experimented with computational design and new fabrication methods; although more recently, he’s been focusing on creating projects with cross-laminated timber. One of his best works is the Nuremberg Concert Hall, where he used CLT.

8. Casey Rehm

For Rehm, incorporating wood into smaller-scale projects is critical, as he believes it can have a much greater impact on the construction industry. As a result, he has explored CLT-based solutions for building emergency housing or shelters for individuals who are homeless. "NN_house1" is one of his most famous works: a single-story house that was designed using a 3D neural network.

Wood skyscrapers: taking the forest to the city
